We might never stop blogging (I think)

I had my doubts, but it seems that as long as we have both people and the internet, the former will never stop blogging.

Topics evolve and morph, blogs themselves are started and then abandoned, platforms die and are born, readers come and go but a desire to:

put your thoughts on a screen
in a certain order that hopefully makes sense,
about a topic you deeply care about

— that desire stays, and so the blogging continues.

As a blog reader, I:

2008: Was reading a fair amount of Blogger/Blogspot and stand-alone Wordpress blogs that I followed in my Google Reader.

Then Twitter emerged, and it seemed like a lot of conversations migrated there. I joined and enjoyed it for some time but it was not the same as standalone blogs - the pressure to log in at least once a day to stay on top of conversation was making me anxious.

Google closed Google Reader in 2013 and made it harder to keep track of all RSS feeds in one place. I've tried other RSS readers but nothing I tried worked for me. A lot of blogs I was following stopped posting. I suspect some of the blog authors were consumed by the instantaneous gratification offered by social media.

2015: Had to create a Facebook account for work and it proved to be addictive for me. I was still following some Wordpress blogs that posted their updates to Facebook but my entertainment mostly switched to books + YouTube + social media.

Medium gained traction around the same time as well and had some people producing good pieces on a regular basis but later it became unbearable - too much self-promo and unmarked advertisement.

2020: Started noticing some good publications coming from Substack. I liked that I could skip subscribing and go straight to reading the posts from a given writer. To me it really looked more like a new blogging platform replacing Medium than an email newsletter service.

In 2025, I feel like Substack has adopted too many of social media features. Also, significantly people are whining about not enough people subscribing, reading etc. There're still some good publications there that I check from time to time but I don't like the overall vibe of the platform.

Now, the main challenge for me is "Where to find the people who are blogging interestingly and honestly?" Could be about things I'm interested in, could be about something I have never knew of or reflected on before.
